Frequently asked questions
Yes! The Barista Express is an excellent choice for beginners who want to learn proper espresso technique. While it’s a manual espresso machine that requires you to grind, dose, tamp, and steam milk yourself, it includes helpful features like a pressure gauge for real-time feedback, pre-infusion technology, and PID temperature control. The included BILT® app provides 3D interactive setup instructions and brewing guidance. Most beginners can make their first decent espresso within a few practice shots
The Barista Express typically takes 3-5 minutes to reach optimal brewing temperature. The POWER button light will flash while heating and will stop flashing once the machine is ready. You’ll hear some pumping sounds during warm-up, which is completely normal. For best results, run a blank shot through the group head before brewing to ensure everything is at the right temperature.
No! One of the biggest advantages of the Barista Express is its integrated conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate grinder, saving you money and counter space. The grinder delivers freshly ground coffee directly into the portafilter for optimal flavor and freshness.
The Barista Express includes both types. Single-wall (traditional) baskets have one layer with small holes and require proper grinding, dosing, and tamping technique for best results – they’re ideal for experienced users who want full control. Dual-wall (pressurized) baskets have two layers and are more forgiving, working well even with pre-ground coffee or less-than-perfect technique. Beginners should start with dual-wall baskets and progress to single-wall as their skills improve.
For espresso, start with grind size 5 as recommended in the manual. This is a good baseline for most medium-roast beans. If your shots pull too fast (under 20 seconds), grind finer by moving to a lower number (4, 3, 2, 1). If shots pull too slow (over 35 seconds) or won’t flow at all, grind coarser by moving to a higher number (6, 7, 8). The ideal extraction time for a double shot is 25-30 seconds.
Yes! The Barista Express has an internal burr adjustment for finer grinding. Using a 10mm socket or the included Allen key, you can access the top burr and adjust it to a finer setting. This is useful if you’re using light roasts or find that even setting 1 isn’t fine enough. Only make one adjustment at a time and test before adjusting further. Refer to your user manual for detailed instructions.
For a double shot (most common), use approximately 18-22 grams of coffee in the 2-cup basket. For a single shot, use 10-12 grams in the 1-cup basket. The Barista Express includes a Razor™ dose trimming tool to help you achieve the correct dose by trimming excess grounds to the right level. Proper dosing is crucial for good extraction and consistent results.
Uneven grinding or clumping can be caused by static electricity or coffee oil buildup. Try these solutions: use the included Dosing Funnel™ attachment to reduce mess, run the grinder cleaning cycle periodically to remove oil buildup on the burrs, or add a tiny drop of water to your beans before grinding (called the “Ross Droplet Technique”) to reduce static. Also ensure your bean hopper is locked in place properly.
The pressure gauge shows real-time extraction pressure during brewing. The optimal range is in the “Espresso Range” marked on the gauge (typically 9-11 bars of pressure). If the needle stays too low, your grind is too coarse or your dose is too light. If it maxes out in the red zone, your grind is too fine, you’ve over-tamped, or there’s too much coffee in the basket. Use the gauge as a learning tool to dial in your perfect shot.
