Direct trade is a form of sourcing that cuts out the middleman. It allows retailers, such as Everyday People Coffee & Tea, to establish relationships directly with the farmers who grow our products.
This eliminates the need for a long supply chain with importers and exporters, allowing us to return more of the profits to the farmers. It also allows us to be part of the entire process, ensuring that each of our products meets the standards of quality that we put forth.
By establishing a sustainable system, we know that we only receive the finest coffee and tea while simultaneously helping farmers grow and build their livelihood. 95% of all of our single origin coffees and teas are sourced directly from the farmers who grow them.
Whole coffee beans last the longest, remaining fresh for about 3 to 4 weeks. For the best possible brew, we suggest buying your coffee as whole beans and only grinding as much as you’ll use at a time.
Once a bag of ground coffee is opened, it’s best used within 2 weeks. And if you like to brew in bulk, be sure to either drink it within 12 hours, or store it in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.
The guidelines for tea are similar to coffee. Although our teas have a 2-year shelf life after opening, the life of the tea also depends on keeping it cool and dry. Even so, the natural oils in tea leaves evaporate over time, so they’re best consumed within the first year.
All of our coffee originates from specialty-grade farms where ethical trade practices are paramount, emphasizing strong relationships and deep respect for both the land and the farmers. Each batch is meticulously evaluated based on cup quality, farming processes, and sustainable practices. We pride ourselves on ethical and sustainable operations, with 95% of all our single origin coffees and teas sourced directly from farmers. Learn more about our specific farm partners.
For dried goods like coffee and tea, the life of the product depends on how it is stored. They will last longest when stored in a cool and dry place that's out of direct sunlight, and they only spoil if they get wet. They don't expire otherwise, but they will lose their potency with time.
Since coffee doesn't technically expire, it's safe to consume old coffee that has been stored properly. The only time coffee really goes bad is when it gets wet, at which point it can also develop mold.
Coffee Freshness Guidelines:
- Whole coffee beans: 3-4 weeks for optimal freshness
- Ground coffee (once opened): Best used within 2 weeks
- Brewed coffee: Drink within 12 hours or store in fridge for 3-4 days
- Coffee stored in freezer: Up to 4 months in airtight container
Tea Freshness Guidelines:
The guidelines for tea are similar to coffee. Although our teas have a 2-year shelf life after opening, the life of the tea also depends on keeping it cool and dry. Even so, the natural oils in tea leaves evaporate over time, so they're best consumed within the first year.

The key to keeping your coffee fresh and delicious is to avoid any air, heat, light, and moisture that will compromise the freshness and flavor. Coffee beans absorb moisture, so it's crucial to keep them in an airtight container and stored in a cool place. Sunshine can also compromise the flavor, so it's best to keep beans in an opaque container that's stored out of the sun and away from heat.
Another method to keeping coffee fresh longer is to freeze it, though there are mixed feelings on whether this is the best method. While it can extend the life of your coffee, it also takes caution to do it correctly. The most important thing is to not let air or moisture into the coffee. Be sure to always use an airtight container and to only remove a small amount at a time, returning the rest before condensation can form on the frozen coffee.
The pour over is a coffee brewing method that's perfect for making one or two cups at a time. Ground coffee is held in a filter and brewed directly into a cup or pitcher as hot water is poured over it.
Though the method is simple, it does take a bit of skill to perfect. With a method to pouring the water and to choosing the right combination of tools for your preferred taste, the pour over method allows for a customizable experience that's ideal for those who truly want to savor their cup of joe.
Making a great cup of coffee using the pour over method involves pouring the water onto the grounds in a steady stream. This constant pressure will agitate the grounds, activating the oils in them and bringing forward a bolder taste and smell.
A pour over kit is the easiest way to make delicious pour over coffee. Our Bali Blue Single Origin Single Serve Pour Over Kit includes 10 packets of our most popular ground coffee.
Simple brewing steps:
- Heat your water to 200 degrees Fahrenheit
- Open the single serve packet and secure the white hangers to your cup
- Carefully pour water into the filter in several circular motions
- Dispose of your kit and enjoy your coffee!
Our single serve pour over kits are great for camping, outings, or as a quick and easy way to make a cup first thing in the morning. For more detailed brewing instructions, check out our brew guides.
Tea Questions
Our teas are made with tea leaves grown under the 98%+ Ethical Tea Partnership, as well as various organics such as fruits, seeds, flowers, and other natural flavors.
The amount of caffeine in tea is based on the type of tea leaf, the amount of tea used per cup, how long the tea is brewed, and the temperature of the water used to brew the tea.
As a rule, broken tea leaves will produce a stronger cup than whole tea leaves. More tea will also produce a higher caffeine content, as will a longer brewing time and higher water temperatures.
Caffeine content by tea type:
- Black and green teas: 50-80mg of caffeine per 8oz cup (approximately 1/3 to ½ of the amount of caffeine in an 8oz cup of coffee)
- Herbal teas: Caffeine free (teas not made with tea leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant, such as chamomile, ginger, and peppermint)
Both green teas have natural properties that counteract some of the negative effects that come from caffeine.
